Learn why movement is more than just exercise, why it's so important for your health and how to start improving your movement practice right now

"It is a shame for a [person] to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which [their] body is capable."

Marcus Aurelius

The Month Of April Is All About Movement

Warmer weather is on it’s way and it’s time to crawl out of winter hibernation and get the blood flowing again!

Every newsletter this month is going to be focused on movement.

And I’m deliberately calling it movement and not just exercise. There is so much more to movement than just workout sessions; we’ll get into that later.

Each week this month, I’ll cover a different modality of movement, why it’s important, and what you can do to incorporate it in sustainable ways in your life.

And to recognize this focus on movement, I’m offering a 20% discount on coaching services that focus specifically on movement. All month.

Now’s the time to get that movement piece of the wellness puzzle firmly in place.

So make sure to book your free strategy session before the month is over. May is coming fast!

Movement Benefits Every Aspect Of Our Health And Performance

I’m not going to mince words on this one. According to an NHIS cohort study of nearly 250,000 individuals

“those who engaged in both aerobic and muscle strengthening activities consistent with the recommended 2018 physical activity guidelines for Americans showed a 40% reduced risk of all cause mortality”

Wow. If that doesn’t get you moving nothing will.

But it’s important we don’t focus solely on the negatives.

What are some to the benefits to regular exercise?

1. Improve your ability move

This one might seem obvious, but it’s important to call out.

Have you gotten winded walking up stairs?
Or felt pain in your knees, or lower back?
Have you had to say to no to activities you love because moving was too painful?
Do you blame the aches and pains on getting old?

It doesn’t have to be like this!

Most of these problems (excepting acute injury and disease) occur because we stop moving!

2. Improve your cognitive function

Moving is not just for your body.

It’s also for your brain.

Regular exercises has profound effects on working memory, executive thinking, decision making, speed of processing information….literally everything cognitive function is improved with regular exercise.

It’s no surprise then that regular exercise reduces the risk of dementia by as much as 30%!

3. Increase your self confidence

Who doesn’t want to look good naked? C’mon, you can admit it! I know I do!

While exercise without watching your diet isn’t going to magically melt away the fat, it does help change the calorie expenditure equation so it makes burning that fat a lot easier.

And even if you’re just jogging or walking, it builds muscle tone.

You have abs my friend, exercise can help them come out of hiding!

4. Deepen your sleep

I’m sure you know how much I love sleep.

Regular exercise helps to regulate your nervous system so that your baseline levels of stress and anxiety are reduced.

Less stress means deeper, higher quality sleep!

5. Increase your energy levels

You may feel tired right after exercise, but that doesn’t last long.

Moving throughout the day will keep your energy levels high and reduce your dependence on caffeine or other stimulants.

6. Improve your mood

Did you know that walking for just an hour a day can reduce your risk of depression by nearly 30%!

Don’t have an hour?

15 minutes of jogging will do the same.

7. Put a spark in your sex life

And this goes beyond just looking better naked!

Exercise increases the health of your circulatory system. What does that mean?

Well if you’re a man, you’re definitely going to be more up for intimacy.

And for everyone, it’s going to heighten sensations and give you stamina for some marathon sessions 🥵🥵

Movement Is One Of The Four Foundational Pillars In The Peritus Wellness Model

My performance coaching is based on the fundamental relationship between Sleep, Diet, Movement and Mind.

None of these exist in isolation. They all impact each other.

This can create a virtuous cycle or a negative feedback loop. It works both ways.

Which way is up to you.

Improving your movement will absolutely kick start that cycle in a positive direction.

Movement Is More Than Just Exercise

We tend to focus solely on exercise when we think of movement, but there’s a reason this post isn’t about just exercise.

Exercise is just one component of movement that we’ll hit on throughout the month.

Here’s what you’ll see from me in the next 4 weeks of April:

  1. Activity: We’re going to start with the most basic part of movement first and demonstrate why any sort of movement is beneficial and how you can incorporate it into your life.

  2. Workouts: This is where we get into the traditional notion of exercise. Strength training, jogging, Crossfit, HIIT, cycling…we’ll get into it all!

  3. Mobility: Movement isn’t just about moving more, it’s also about moving better. And moving better isn’t just about stretching. You won’t want to miss this.

  4. Recovery: The last piece of movement isn’t movement at all! But it might be the most important. Learn why active recovery is so important to maximize the benefits of movement.

Here’s Your Weekly Charge ⚡

The weekly charge this week is very simple.

But it will likely be easier for some than for others.

I want you to take an inventory of how much you move each day.

This isn’t just workouts, although definitely include this.

What percentage of time do you sit vs stand? How often do you walk? How often are you stationary? Do you fidget?

It’s important to understand where you’re starting at if you want to make changes.
